Wheat is easy to grow almost anywhere in the United States, even as a wide-row crop in your garden. One gardener in Utah attests to having planted 30 pounds of hard red winter wheat seeds on one-eighth of an acre and harvesting 250 pounds of wheat in July. On a somewhat smaller scale, even if you have a front yard that’s 20 feet by 50 feet, you could plant 6 pounds of wheat seed and harvest nearly 50 pounds of wheat.
We have years of experience of growing wheatgrass and being in the commercial wheat business over the last 34 years. During that time we have experienced many different kinds of wheat.
There are two kinds of wheat one can buy: chemical free wheat seeds and certified organic wheat berries (wheat seeds). Most wheat seeds are chemical free in that the farmer might or might not use an herbicide to control the weeds in his fields. If he uses chemicals on the wheat, it will cause a distinct taste in the bread thus no chemicals are used on the wheat itself.
Then there is certified organic wheat berries or seeds: Certified organic wheat is the same as chemical free except the wheat seeds are grown by farmers who have not used chemicals on their land for over ten years. The difference is the certification. If wheat seeds are organic and you grow it in organic soil, it will have all the necessary organisms in the soil to help it assimilate the minerals properly. Organic wheat should also have the organism on it which produces cobalamin B12 In our search to give you the very best wheat we have done two things. We now handle an chemical free hard red winter wheat, from South Eastern Utah. For those who want certified organic, we have a hard red winter Utah State Certified Organic Wheat Seeds & Wheat Berries.
There are several main reasons people buy their wheat seed from us.
1. They want to grow wheatgrass to make wheat grass juice for dietary, or nutritional reasons. You can grow wheatgrass for your self, or your pets! Cats love wheat grass, which then makes it, well, CAT GRASS! Yes, that's right, catgrass and wheat grass are the same thing!
2. Our customers simply grind the wheat berries into fresh flour for baking. If you've never experienced the benefits of grinding and baking with your own flour, then you need too!
Whole grain wheat seed's cellular walls protect nutrients from oxidation. The process of oxidation begins to occur as soon as wheat is ground, exposing the cell's contents to oxygen in the air. Flour that is several days (or more) old, has been exposed to oxygen that inevitably diminishes its nutritional value. The way to get full nutrition from whole wheat foods is to mill the flour when you need it, right in your kitchen. Modern high-speed grain mills make it fast and easy to enjoy the freshest, best tasting and most nutritious food's imaginable!
